Aging—gracefully, boldly, quietly, hesitantly…? Whatever approach you choose, there are going to be surprises along the way.
Each year around my birthday, I like to share my annual gift from Mother Nature with my younger sisters. I find it funny; they sometimes do not. Sometimes the response is a polite laugh and sometimes it is a groan. Last year, it was the lines that seem to appear overnight on either side of your mouth—the ones that supposedly reflect all the laughter you’ve enjoyed along the way. One day, you look in the mirror, and there they are! No warning at all! Rude! Faced with the choice, I chose more laughter—maybe that was after the groan.
Recently, I attended the funeral of my uncle. It was an opportunity to honor and say goodbye to him. It was also an opportunity to reconnect with family members I haven’t seen in many years. You know the rooms you walk into and immediately feel at ease because you know you are with “your people?” These are my people. One of my cousins casually remarked, “You know, we’re both turning 60 next year.” I was stunned. That cannot be true. How did we get here? She is right! That milestone is coming soon.
These small moments of reality can cause us to pause and reflect. While we are grateful for another day, we recognize that things will change and that preparing for what comes next may be worthwhile.
As we move through our working years, conversations about the future often focus on retirement savings, investment accounts, and financial goals. While these topics are important, preparing for the next stage of life involves so much more.
It may start with asking yourself a few simple—but important —questions.
What do you want life to look like? In one year, in five years, in 10 years?
Where do you want to live?
- Near the people you love?
- In a more pleasant climate?
- In a senior community?
- Urban, rural?
- A location that balances lifestyle and tax considerations?
How do you want to spend your time?
- Relationship building?
- Work?
- Volunteering?
- Fitness and health?
- Learning?
- Leisure activities?
Who do you want to spend it with?
- People you love?
- People you work with?
- New friends and communities?
What steps are you taking to ensure you have meaningful connections as life marches forward?
- Broadening your social network?
- Identifying organizations and groups you would like to engage with?
- Connecting more meaningfully with family and friends?
What habits are you building today that will support your future health and independence?
What changes and next steps are necessary?
- Do you need a more definitive idea of any financial adjustments required to feel confident about the coming years?
- Would less time interacting with technology and more time with humans improve your quality of life?
- Visiting places you may want to consider living?
- Living in a way today that supports better physical health, mental well-being, and engagement in the years ahead?
- Considering who will help you if and when assistance is needed?
Aging is one of life’s few guarantees. Yet many of us spend more time planning our next vacation than we do thinking about how we want to spend the next chapter of our lives. Planning for the future does not require having all the answers today, only a willingness to ask the questions.
The answers will likely evolve over time, just as we do. But taking time to reflect now can help you make more intentional decisions later. Whether retirement is around the corner or many years away, thoughtful planning can help you approach the future with greater confidence, flexibility, and purpose.
And along the way, there will undoubtedly be a few more surprises from Mother Nature. Hopefully, we will be able to greet them with a smile, a little laughter, and the comfort of knowing we have given some thought to what comes next.
After all, aging is not simply about growing older. It is about continuing to create a life that feels meaningful at every stage.
